Harken Health To Close Doors for Good
Harken Health will be closing permanently in the summer of 2017.
Harken Health, an experimental subsidiary of United Healthcare, will be shutting down unexpectedly after transitioning from the individual health exchanges (otherwise known as “Obamacare”) in 2016 to the group insurance market and after recently opening several new Harken Health Centers for their customers throughout the greater Chicago area.
Not much is known about their sudden decision to exit, but it marks a troubling trend for Illinois insurance carriers. In 2016, Land of Lincoln Health also exited the market abruptly, leaving thousands of people scrambling to find new coverage and the Illinois Department of Insurance stepping in to mandate a Special Enrollment Period for Land of Lincoln policyholders to find new plans.
It is expected that Harken Health customers will be left in a similar situation and the Department of Insurance will be likely to step in to help consumers.
However, Harken policyholders may have a hard time finding an independent broker to help them select a new plan during the special enrollment period. Several insurance companies in Illinois have stopped paying broker commissions during special enrollment periods, which has led some insurance advisers to exit the individual market.
