Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois – Plan Descriptions

BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois is the largest health insurance company in the state with over 6.5 million members.

They offer health plans that can be customized for individuals, children, and families that include consumer-directed plans, Health Savings Accounts (referred to as the Bronze PPO Plans), short-term plans, Medicare Supplements, and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. The different plans are described below.

NEW: As of January 1, 2013 BCBSIL now offers Medicare Advantage Plans with zero premium to Medicare eligible individuals.

Platinum Plans

Our Rating:

Platinum Plans are the most expensive plans, but also have the most comprehensive benefits. Platinum Plans have a higher monthly premium and often lower out-of-pocket costs than Gold plans. BCBSIL only offers one Platinum Plan, Blue Precision Platinum HMO Plan 004. Platinum HMO Plan 004 covers 100% of costs with no deductible, while you only cover the copays for medical services. This is an HMO plan. You must select a Blue Precision HMO Network Primary Care Physician (PCP) when enrolling in this plan.

Blue PPO Silver Plans

Blue PPO Silver Plans are the second most popular BCBSIL individual plans. Blue Silver PPO Plans include access to the Blue Advantage Entrepreneur (BAE) PPO network, the largest PPO network in Illinois that includes over 90% of Illinois doctors and 96% of hospitals.

All Silver plans offer the same set of essential health benefits, quality and amount of care. The differences are how much your premium costs each month, what portion of the bill you pay for things like hospital visits or prescription medications, and how much your total out-of-pocket costs are. Silver Plans have a higher monthly premium and often lower out-of-pocket costs than bronze plans. In most cases, Silver plans cover 80% of costs, while you cover 20%.

  • Bronze Plan 005 – $5,000 individual deductible and 80% coinsurance
  • Bronze Plan 006 (HSA Compatible) – $6,000 individual deductible and 100% coinsurance

Blue Precision Bronze HMO Plan

Our Rating:
The Bronze HMO Plan 003 is the least expensive HMO plan, but also includes comprehensive benefits. Bronze Plans have a lower monthly premium and often higher out-of-pocket costs than Platinum, Gold, and Silver plans. This is an HMO plan. You must select a Blue Precision HMO Network Primary Care Physician (PCP) when enrolling in this plan.

The The Bronze HMO 003 Plan uses the Blue Precision HMO network, one the largest HMO network in Illinois. You must select a network primary care physician (PCP), who coordinates your care within the network and referrals are required from your PCP to see a specialists.
